How To Make A Tincture

I found a pretty simple and easy to follow set of directions for making tinctures. The source is located at the bottom of the page so please let it be known that I am simply sharing a bit of information but I did not create it.

Tinctures are suitable for extracting plant and herb essences that do not infuse well through water and heat. Roots and woody parts are commonly used in tincture format. Tinctures are highly concentrated, so be sure that you are administering proper dosages when using them for medicial reasons. You can use tinctures during ritual or spellwork, anytime that you would use oil. Any mix of herbs will do, depending on your purpose for the tincture. Because of the alcohol content, you might want to be careful around candles, though.

Ingredients:
  • 1oz of dried herb or 1/2 oz fresh herb
  • A clean glass jar with tight lid (a mason jar works well)
  • Vodka (100 proof is best, 80 proof will do)
  • Cheesecloth
  • Dark Bottle (preferably with a dropper)
  • Funnel
Directions:
  1. Place the herbs in the jar.
  2. Pour Vodka over the herbs until you have 2 inches more Vodka than herbs.
Close the lid tightly, shake bottle and label with name of tincture and the date.
  3. Keep the jar in a cool, dark place for 1 month. For stronger tinctures, leave for 3 months.
Tinctures are generally stronger if started on the New Moon. (Check current moon phase here).

When your tincture is ready to be strained:
  1. Get your cheese cloth, dark bottle and funnel.
  2. Place the cheesecloth in the funnel and slowly pour out all of the tincture mix.
  3. Once all the herbs are in the funnel, grab the cheesecloth and form a ball.
  4. Squeeze out all excess tincture from this ball.
  5. Place lid on bottle and label.
  6. Store in cool dark place. Keeps for 2 years.

*For larger batches, I follow these measurements:
7 oz dried herb or 2 1/2 oz fresh herb to 5 cups alcohol.
**You should never take a tincture internally, unless it was specifically made for medicinal purposes. Standard dose is up to 1 tsp, 3 times daily.
